First period during a vacation trip: how to pack the perfect bag
Going on vacation with your daughter as she enters puberty? Besides clothes and travel documents, a few simple items can make all the difference if her first period happens during the trip.
You know that moment when you think you've finally finished packing, zip up the suitcase, and five minutes later remember something else? That's always happened to me. I check the clothes, pack the sunscreen, make sure the documents are in my bag, and ask at least three times if anyone forgot their phone charger.
But when my daughter started showing the first signs of puberty, a new thought made its way onto my packing checklist. What if her first period happens during the trip?
Maybe you've had that thought too. After all, a first period doesn't care about dates or places. It can happen during a weekend at Grandma's house, on a beach vacation, or right in the middle of the trip you've been planning for so long.
The good news is that you don't have to turn it into something to worry about. A few simple preparations can help your daughter feel more confident and let both of you enjoy the trip with much more peace of mind. So, let's pack her bag together?

Before packing, I think about how my daughter will feel
At first, I only thought about the things I needed to pack. Then I realized the most important part actually came before that.
My daughter needed to know that if her first period happened during the trip, there'd be no reason to feel scared or embarrassed.
A simple conversation can make all the difference, especially when you don't turn it into a big deal. You don't need to tell her she’ll probably get her period during vacation. Just explain that it could happen and that, if it does, she'll already know what to do.
That takes a huge weight off her shoulders and, honestly, off ours too.
The items I never leave out of our suitcase
After that conversation, it's time for the practical part. That's when I realized I didn't need to fill the suitcase with things we might never use.
I just needed to think about what could really make a difference if my daughter got her first period during the trip.
Pads: They take up little space and bring a lot of peace of mind
At first, I wondered if it made sense to pack pads before my daughter even got her first period.
Now I don't think twice about it. They barely take up any space and can save you from having to find a pharmacy at the last minute in a place you don't know.
I like to go with soft, regular-size pads. There's no magic number for every trip, but a few should be enough for a short vacation. If you're staying longer, just pack a few extra.

Extra underwear is never too much
It's one of those little things that might not seem important, but can make a big difference. I always pack a few extra pairs of underwear for my daughter, and I prefer cotton ones because they're usually more comfortable.
If she doesn't need them, great. They'll simply come back home unused. But if her first period happens, she'll have a clean change of underwear ready instead of having to improvise.
A toiletry bag just for her made a big difference
One of the best ideas we've had at home was putting together a Menstrual Kit for the trip.
Instead of leaving everything scattered around the suitcase, I put it all in a small toiletry bag that's easy to find. That way, if her first period happens during vacation, my daughter knows exactly where to find everything she might need.
Besides keeping the suitcase organized, this Menstrual Kit also helped my daughter become more independent.
She helped put it together, learned what each item was for, and started feeling much more confident. It might seem like a small detail, but knowing she can find what she needs on her own is really important during this stage of discovery.

It might seem like a simple list, but it can bring a huge sense of security:
- Pads;
- Extra underwear;
- Wet wipes;
- A waterproof bag;
- Hand sanitizer.
I also think about clothes that make everything more comfortable
When I started choosing clothes for our trips, I began looking at them a little differently. Now I always pack comfortable, easy-to-wear pieces that help my daughter feel at ease if her period arrives.
Leggings, shorts, light dresses, and comfortable pajamas are great options. If we're heading to the beach or a pool, I also pack an extra swimsuit and a change of clothes that's easy to put on.
It might not even be necessary, but it's the kind of little precaution that gives us both much more peace of mind.
Each destination requires different care
After a few trips, I realized that the destination also affects what’s worth packing.
If we're heading to the beach, I like to pack a cover-up and an extra outfit in the day-trip bag. For parks or longer walks, the toiletry bag always comes with us. And if we're going somewhere more remote, where finding a pharmacy might be difficult, I prefer to bring a few extra pads.
It's not overkill. It's practical. And when you're traveling, practicality makes all the difference.
The most important thing i can pack does not fit inside a suitcase
After getting everything organized, I realized something interesting. The most important thing on the trip wasn't a pad, a toiletry bag, or an extra change of clothes. It was my daughter's confidence.
When she knows she can talk to me, that I won't judge her, and that getting her period is a natural part of growing up, everything feels easier.
If her first period happens during the trip, she'll know what to do. And if she has any questions, she'll also know she can come to me without feeling embarrassed or afraid.
At the end of the day, that's what we want: for our daughters to enjoy their vacation, get to know their bodies at their own pace, and feel confident through every new stage of growing up.
