Is there any reason why my period is so late? I only had 2 periods this year and I'm feeling super empty without it... I did spot (brown) but I didn't get my period

Okay so it can totally feel super confusing when your period is late or doesn't show up like you expect, especially when you're just starting out and only had a couple this year. Periods can be really unpredictable for the first few years, and that's totally normal.

Why periods can be late

Your cycle is a wild ride, especially when you're young. Hormones are still figuring out what they're doing, and sometimes they just don't release an egg like they're supposed to, which means your period gets delayed.

Things like stress (like school or family stuff), changes in your diet or exercise, or even just being a little sick can mess with your cycle. So even if you usually get it, your body might decide to take a break or show up late.

What about spotting?

Spotting, especially if it's brown, is super common when your period is being unpredictable. Brown spotting is just old blood, so it can be your body trying to have a period and not quite getting there, or it could just be a little bit of old blood leaving your body. It doesn't mean anything bad, but it can be annoying, like, are you or aren't you having a period?! The important thing is that it does NOT count as a period, meaning you still skipped this one.

Doctors say it's normal for cycles to be all over the place for the first year or two after your very first period. So two periods in a year might be typical for you right now while your body is still figuring things out. But if you're really worried or feel like something is off, it's always okay to talk to a grown-up you trust, like a parent or doctor. They can help you figure out what's going on!
