starry_pancake asked

i had brown discaarge for a few days but then it whent back to white could that be my fist period?

Soso answered

Yes, that definitely could have been your first period. That can be how a first period starts, so tell a grown-up what you noticed: they can help with supplies, and check with a doctor if it isn't a period.

A first period often doesn't look like a bright red flow at all. Blood has iron in it, and when blood takes longer to leave your body, that iron mixes with air and turns brown or rust-coloured. Flow is often really light and slow right at the beginning of having periods, which is why a reddish-brown stain on your underwear or a few days of brown discharge is super common for cycle number one.

Going back to white discharge after those few days also makes total sense. Clear, white or off-white discharge is normal in puberty and can start some months before a first period, and it can look a bit yellow once it dries on your underwear. Tell a grown-up if it comes out a different colour (like deep yellow, green or grey), smells strong or bad, changes texture, suddenly gets much heavier, or comes with itching, soreness, pain when peeing or tummy pain.

Most people bleed for 3 to 7 days, and a first period can be much shorter and lighter. Tell a grown-up if you need a new pad or tampon every 1 to 2 hours, your period lasts more than 7 days, you pass clots bigger than about 2.5 cm, blood leaks through to your clothes or bed, you miss normal things because of your period, or you feel tired or out of breath a lot. Also, before age 9, any bleeding or spotting means telling a grown-up so a doctor can check.

Now is a great time to start tracking so you can see when the next one happens. You can log days like this in the Soso app to keep an eye on your cycle patterns.

Okay, so when you feel like your period is about to start, it's probably because your body is giving you some clues! That's totally normal, your body is super smart and usually gives you little hints before the main event. What it feels…
