QUESTION BY MAE

So it’s my first ever period I’m on now and I’m just wondering how much are you normally supposed to bleed?

Okay so when you get your first period, it's totally normal for the bleeding to be kinda light, like not a lot at all. Sometimes it's just a little bit of spotting or light pinkish-brown discharge, which can be super confusing because you're like, 'wait, is this even a period?' And yeah, it totally counts as one!

For most people, your period will get heavier over the next few years. Everyone's different, but usually, it's not super heavy bleeding that just gushes out, so don't worry about that too much. You'll probably go through about 3-6 pads or tampons a day on your heavier days, which are usually the first few days of your period. You shouldn't be soaking through a pad or tampon in an hour or two for several hours in a row. If that happens, or if you feel super dizzy or tired, definitely tell a grown-up just to be safe.
