QUESTION BY MADDIE

I think I’m going to get my period soon but how do I know when I actually got it?

Okay, so you'll know you actually got your period when you see blood coming out of your vagina, either in your underwear or on a pad or toilet paper. It won't be like a gush of blood or anything scary like that, usually it's just a reddish-brown stain at first.

Your first period often starts pretty light and might not last super long, like maybe a few days. Sometimes it's more of a brownish color because the blood is leaving your body slowly and getting mixed with air. It can be red too, so don't worry if it's not brown. The main thing is that it's actual blood, not just discharge.

Once you see that first bit of blood, that's Day 1 of your period. You can mark it in your calendar or the Soso app to start tracking your cycle. If you ever have really heavy bleeding, like soaking through a pad or tampon every 1-2 hours, or huge clots, it's a good idea to tell a grown-up so they can check it out.
